Paragliding in Bir Billing has a very interesting story behind it. Hang gliding was introduced to Bir Billing in the 1980s by French pilots who recognized the favorable flying conditions in the area. However, hang gliding was difficult due to the heavy metal frames and canopy that pilots had to carry to the take-off point, which was located 14 km uphill. Since there was no road to Billing at that time, porters and mules were needed to carry the equipment, which was not feasible for all pilots.
In the early 1990s, a New Zealand pilot named Bruce Mills introduced paragliding to Bir Billing, which quickly gained popularity among local pilots and residents. Tandem paragliding, where one pilot and one tourist fly together, was later introduced in the early 2000s, creating a new commercial activity and employment opportunity for locals.
Today, Bir Billing boasts over 200 tandem paragliding pilots. In 2015, the Paragliding World Cup was hosted in Bir Billing, attracting pilots from 130 different countries. This event helped popularize the sport in India and increased commercial flying in the area. Bir Billing has become a world-famous paragliding destination and a favorite among both Indian and international pilots.
